The Oldest Maxim
Promotion
Promotion is a popular way to develop extra tricks. It doesn’t
matter where the outstanding high cards are located, or how the
outstanding cards are divided. Here is an example:
♠ 6 5 2
♠ Q J 10 9 8 ♠ 7 4 3
♠ A K
Once the ♠A and ♠K are driven out, West’s three remaining
spades are winners. The disadvantage is that the lead has to be
given up twice to promote the winners.
Here’s an example from North-South’s point of view:
♦ 9 7 5 4
♦ 6 2 ♦ A 8 3
♦ K Q J 10
Once the ♦A is driven out of the East hand, South has three
promoted winners, and in this example the lead has to be given
up only once.
